A Novel Approach to Water Softening Based on Graphene Oxide-Activated Open Cell Foams

This work focuses on exploring a new configuration for the reduction of water hardness based surface modification polyurethane (PU) open cell foams by deposition thin graphene oxide (GO) washcoat layers. GO was deposited dip–squeeze coating procedure and consolidated thermal treatment. The final load controlled performing consecutive depositions, after three which, inventory up to 27 wt% obtained onto PU 60 pores per inch (PPI). GO-coated were assembled into filter, performance system tested continuously feeding with in 190–270 mgCa2+,eq·L−1 range. Remarkable results demonstrated terms total adsorbing capacity, which evaluated measuring outlet titration exhibited values 63 mgCa2+,eq·gGO−1 at specific filtered volume 650 mLH2O·gGO−1, outperforming actual state-of-the-art capacity similar GO-based materials.
